Not long after I brag about how great my students are doing at typing, I get word that the administration has decided to eliminate computer classes at Charlevoix Elementary School. Thank you to my followers for reading my blog, to all the parents for your support, and to my students for always doing your best. I loved teaching you computers!DFrank2http://www.blogger.com/profile/08102943452267719610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3665653207148872120.post-33978539629282706772011-06-09T12:27:00.006-04:002011-06-09T12:45:35.600-04:00Super Typers<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirQ5VGdRgXi5nXP4RU2HaBVo8xgBUYGrJFg5zSvxyAxboUS-m0jvtCozMAxvi14kR4zAEPF-AEwiAdynuji9CRYmmi94hTiFBQyOEw6ew5X7QuRmNT87uv5jVGpvR1ZN2EXQODEwXZgs4/s1600/ttl.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 201px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5616258048177443970" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirQ5VGdRgXi5nXP4RU2HaBVo8xgBUYGrJFg5zSvxyAxboUS-m0jvtCozMAxvi14kR4zAEPF-AEwiAdynuji9CRYmmi94hTiFBQyOEw6ew5X7QuRmNT87uv5jVGpvR1ZN2EXQODEwXZgs4/s320/ttl.jpg" /></a>When third and fourth grade students come to computers, they practice keyboarding for 15 minutes with the program Type to Learn. Each year I keep track of how many lessons they finish. This year's scores are the best ever! This graph shows the average lesson finished for each grade each year. Before 2008, students had 50 minutes of computers each week. In 2008, it was reduced to 40 minutes. Since then, they have had 60 minutes each week! That extra time with each class means we can spend more time practicing typing, among other things, and is why I believe the scores have increased. Why the dip in 2010 for fourth grade? They were in second grade the year I only had 40 minute classes. Second grade is when we talk about and really learn the different keystrokes. Congratulations to this year's third and fourth grade students. You worked hard and that will really pay off!DFrank2http://www.blogger.com/profile/08102943452267719610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3665653207148872120.post-5354009378867941452011-06-07T19:20:00.001-04:002011-06-08T15:30:08.145-04:00Kahn!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOjsBXR1vQquJcWDG6V0OPjoBUkvtYl5nHhN-Un5d2w95mtRUOxfGtV0_Wcl7l-W-aRl86TIT3TrPQNhl4ia0lu0JL1koKqAjkK7aEH-4x_8vbPMS9odJzNmxwAYsM-8W0EyUqgbjZzk4/s1600/kahn.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 88px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615932969994067922" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOjsBXR1vQquJcWDG6V0OPjoBUkvtYl5nHhN-Un5d2w95mtRUOxfGtV0_Wcl7l-W-aRl86TIT3TrPQNhl4ia0lu0JL1koKqAjkK7aEH-4x_8vbPMS9odJzNmxwAYsM-8W0EyUqgbjZzk4/s320/kahn.jpg" /></a><a href="http://www.khanacademy.org/">Kahn Academy</a> is a web site that started out with math tutorial videos. There are many shorteners out there to make it easier for you and whoever you are sending the link to. One of those options is the <a href="http://goo.gl/">Google URL Shortener</a>. Copy and paste a long address into the box and Google will give a short address that points to the same spot. Besides making it easier for people to get to the web page, it also keeps track of how many times people use the shortened address. I recommend only using it if you are distributing the address on paper. If you are emailing, keep the address long so people can see where they are going.DFrank2http://www.blogger.com/profile/08102943452267719610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3665653207148872120.post-37700221636484164782011-05-06T10:25:00.001-04:002011-05-24T10:27:55.790-04:00Tool School<a href="http://toolschoolces.blogspot.com/"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 286px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602852044159652786" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHlls573L2s03T_GCyXBjzQqqxmwU3UNSZPkczQm7HKYoaoQk2YNgJHhaO2Mq1hlGAhNhZloVyCEWAg3YCfDZ1FLyGEDnB0hCkhrOnUIsrHgcF3bl-F-TjPh01VWeN4XOTmUY_y1c8Yjs/s320/toolschool.jpg" /></a>Parents, community volunteers, and high school students came to the elementary school last week to participate in Tool School. Lastly, the class walks around and reads each other's strips.DFrank2http://www.blogger.com/profile/08102943452267719610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3665653207148872120.post-69216774444463651072011-04-20T09:04:00.004-04:002011-05-24T10:27:55.791-04:00Computers Help Us<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggqe1EGEbdcO-hzTCXfVSS3CFEaTi2DRYN7glcTWHSKCxyKIlBXQsRBxn2OC0XMNPZYtkl5NEex1vkGpHrH8YDwcX3uGFf-RSOntuFgGh0LfJuoMSqe13df8t9B8kjyxc3WGBNeOCp6GM/s1600/rough.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 293px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597296320741035394" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggqe1EGEbdcO-hzTCXfVSS3CFEaTi2DRYN7glcTWHSKCxyKIlBXQsRBxn2OC0XMNPZYtkl5NEex1vkGpHrH8YDwcX3uGFf-RSOntuFgGh0LfJuoMSqe13df8t9B8kjyxc3WGBNeOCp6GM/s320/rough.JPG" /></a>Second grade students just started a three week project. This week they brainstormed ways computers help people and then wrote a rough draft of a paragraph about it. Next week they will type it in Microsoft Word, and the week after that they will spell check, format the text, and add clip art.DFrank2http://www.blogger.com/profile/08102943452267719610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3665653207148872120.post-56358462771318417012011-04-18T13:45:00.003-04:002011-04-18T14:00:48.753-04:00BrainPop Pops Your Brain<a href="http://www.brainpop.com/"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 234px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5596983981348050402" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLZkzLaP94oVs6UZZhRdOJjryf1apHdEkHeDbOP8G6f4NZKUCaaVpKRkUnEn-t0-89FRzq3xzQRST7PpcxpS4k29L5mqMD_nJXGDzccYK881NyNmZ0KuuviZHj2towTf-qwtpLtVYTYxQ/s320/pop.jpg" /></a><a href="http://www.brainpop.com/">BrainPop</a> and <a href="http://www.brainpopjr.com/">BrainPop Jr.</a> (for K-3) are great resources. You create a "pad" and put a link to it in the student shared space. Your students can then access it and work on it together. All of them can edit, add, and delete text, and it keeps track of who does what. Students can even use the chat portion to discuss what they are doing. The final document can be copied or exported to other file types.DFrank2http://www.blogger.com/profile/08102943452267719610noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3665653207148872120.post-45502077465334652872011-03-28T13:22:00.004-04:002011-03-28T13:26:44.457-04:00Calculator Chaos<a href="http://www.mathplayground.com/calculator_chaos.html"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 294px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589183190529162690" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVhBg-uIaTUhMcu3caBur-tnm4EcnYuDsUYn5D1OKEBtUwLKDUDP5kw7n4xbY3uCuy0x6KSM5bGTAYmHwRCn_8_0O5CxVpaWUhode-KhZ9DkOz0i9KBnban5ZzSH3FzxswS71l9RCJxNM/s320/calc.JPG" /></a>Fourth grade students are trying the web site <a href="http://www.mathplayground.com/calculator_chaos.html">Calculator Chaos</a>. I learned many great things, but the one I end up using the most may be <a href="http://www.google.com/cse/?hl=en">Google Custom Search</a>. For class projects, I have always been nervous about doing an all out Google search. Instead I would put a list of links on a page or have a series of shortcuts for the students to follow. With Google Custom Search I won't have to do that. I can set up a search that will just look through the web sites I specify. <a href="http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=003109108360540719022:x88v_6mz4rs&hl=en">Here</a> is one I did for future 50 States projects. Students will still get practice searching, but the resources will be ones I pick.DFrank2http://www.blogger.com/profile/08102943452267719610noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3665653207148872120.post-73804303107045100672011-03-18T08:01:00.000-04:002011-03-18T08:01:00.293-04:00Spring NewsletterIf you didn't make it in for conferences, here is my Spring Newsletter:<br /><br /><strong>Welcome!<br /></strong>Thanks for stopping by the Charlevoix Elementary School computer lab. Many grades have just finished up some exciting projects and there are more fun things planned for the rest of the year. Read below to find out more.<br /><br /><strong>Kindergarten</strong><br />Students continue to learn more and more of the drawing and painting program Kid Pix. You should continue to see some great artwork coming home. Students will also be using the reading program Bailey’s Book House to practice their language arts skills.<br /><br /><strong>First Grade<br /></strong>If you have access to the Internet at home, check out the Goodnight Moon slide shows on the Student Projects page at <a href="http://missfrankcomputers.blogspot.com/search/label/Projects">http://missfrankcomputers.blogspot.com/search/label/Projects</a>. The first graders did a great job. Upcoming activities include drawing a computer, playing a math game, and integrating text and graphics in Microsoft Word.<br /><br /><div><strong>Second Grade<br /></strong>The students have now learned how to type each letter from the home row position. They will continue to practice touch typing using the program Type to Learn, Jr. After spring break, second grade students are going to write, type, proofread, and format a technology-themed paragraph.<br /><br /><strong>Third Grade</strong><br />Students just got to digitally manipulate their school picture. You can see some examples on the bulletin board in the lab. After break students will be writing paragraphs that will be posted online. People from anywhere in the world will be able to read and comment on the paragraphs. There will be a link on the Student Projects webpage to check them out. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid1ntdCuf5BtbFy6FKuNiyccPeiAUjn5dzj0jCZDq1itPOsWVWt3mqZSYV3hHqUWdtlYZ09NFq0C3iDLZNC6tOitZNq7pMUaAqCDOrBejM-O2CIpogOB1WZftmL2YnwwHF97bpFOT20rk/s1600/kite.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 248px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 197px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583936810503184402" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid1ntdCuf5BtbFy6FKuNiyccPeiAUjn5dzj0jCZDq1itPOsWVWt3mqZSYV3hHqUWdtlYZ09NFq0C3iDLZNC6tOitZNq7pMUaAqCDOrBejM-O2CIpogOB1WZftmL2YnwwHF97bpFOT20rk/s320/kite.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><strong>Fourth Grade</strong><br />Whew! After six weeks of work, we just finished the fourth grade web pages. They turned out great! Each student wrote and illustrated a page telling about a state. You can check them out on the Student Projects webpage, also. Upcoming projects include creating a game board and practicing math with the Internet. </div>DFrank2http://www.blogger.com/profile/08102943452267719610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3665653207148872120.post-69747703587906070442011-03-14T09:53:00.004-04:002011-03-14T09:59:27.134-04:00Copyright on the Web<a href="http://www.cyberbee.com/cb_copyright.swf"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 205px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583934773267075730" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5shiVE3RGWx347cDo5_GwmfrWdN3uPF-H5XunnWsaeTRhm19txkIdrci0sQ1ExJubI-xQMJD9yESrYDK3Haw5cbVAjOsZqXiwCQPLprPTjX8hbGSxYTnJmON1HfEZJk-JWLUgTM4uwGY/s320/copyright.jpg" /></a>This week fourth grade students are using the resource <a href="http://www.cyberbee.com/cb_copyright.swf">Copyright on the Web</a> to learn about and discuss copyright laws and how they pertain to school projects.DFrank2http://www.blogger.com/profile/08102943452267719610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3665653207148872120.post-64050630011407350792011-03-09T08:56:00.004-05:002011-03-09T09:00:51.474-05:00Easy CD's<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPPXSaVyR8Zo5YNvBfExtgWaLQTJQ_jQ2IlaxhzZAZ8R1mkuAf7WlykvC_FSRQKzPkYC4L6GvzvL_fFqZ4vURPFVphTWUIQOsN4bgzBOYCAXj4Brc8nFChTUkK6tKRt7xRJThPq8kfGp4/s1600/Roxio.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 178px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582079623553024402" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPPXSaVyR8Zo5YNvBfExtgWaLQTJQ_jQ2IlaxhzZAZ8R1mkuAf7WlykvC_FSRQKzPkYC4L6GvzvL_fFqZ4vURPFVphTWUIQOsN4bgzBOYCAXj4Brc8nFChTUkK6tKRt7xRJThPq8kfGp4/s320/Roxio.jpg" /></a>Our teacher laptops have a shortcut on the desktop for the program Roxio Creator.
